ein grossteil der schwulen setzt sich bereits seit längerem mit der selbstrepräsentation im www auseinander. schon vor dem hype um verschieden grosse plattformen, welche die bildung von netzwerken ermöglichen (und im vergleich mit schwulen plattformen erstaunlich schlecht programmiert sind) konnte auf schwuler seite bereits ein in das tägliche leben integrierter umgang mit solchen möglichkeiten der vernetzung beobachtet werden. zusätzlich haben internetplattformen für schwule eine andere dringlichkeit: einerseits ist es für je nach alter und geographie eine der wenigen möglichkeiten sich mit anderen schwulen auszutauschen, andererseits sind diese plattformen inzwischen ein hauptwerkzeug für das treffen von anderen männern, das schliessen von neuen bekanntschaften geworden. auch wenn es viele verschiedene seiten speziell für schwule gibt, sind die profile doch immer ähnlich aufgebaut und bestehen normalerweise aus drei teilen: statistische angaben (grösse, alter, ort, etc.), freier text (inklusive der wichtigen headline) und bild. in der gestaltung eines profils ist man relativ frei, man würde also in einer ersten annahme eine schillernde fülle von differenz in all diesen profilen erwarten. doch genau das gegenteil ist der fall. es handelt sich eher um eine homogenisierung der repräsentation denn um eine explosion von kreativität. ein grund ist sicherlich die immer mitschwingende möglichkeit des persönlichen kennenlernens, einer der gründe überhaupt ein profil zu eröffnen: dies beschränkt die selbstdarstellung in dem sinne, dass man sich doch an seinem analogem selbst orientieren muss. der andere grund liegt in der technik selber: durch die möglichkeit der erfassung auch detaillierter statistischer angaben ist auch eine sehr fokussierte filterung potentieller freunde möglich. und da man sich doch gut verkaufen möchte, ein möglichst grosses publikum erreichen möchte, scheinen sich viele männer an (imaginierten) idealvorstellungen zu orientieren. für den statistischen teil des profils bedeutet dies, dass man sich teilweise schon gezwungen fühlt ein bisschen kosmetik zu betreiben (alter ist sicher eines dieser nichtsagenden kriterien, welches jedoch sehr schnell zu einem herausfiltern führen kann – gleiches gilt für schwanzgrösse, body-mass-index, länge der haare und ähnliches). problematisch an dieser fülle von statistischen angaben, welche zu einem profil gehören ist das verswchwinden “weicher” information, die für die beurteilung einer person (und in diesem kontext: ihrer attraktivität) sehr wichtig sind: stimme, intonation, bewegung, geruch, körperhaltung, humor, etc.. durch die fülle von statistischen informationen wird sogar suggeriert, dass diese ein reales abbild einer person liefern, dass andere informationen nicht nötig sind (ob dies zur auswirkung hat, dass diese kriterien auch im realen leben an wichtigkeit verlieren ist eine andere frage). dieses verschwinden dieser anderen information lässt sich teileise durch zusätzliche informationen im freien text des profils kompensieren. doch der hauptaugenmerk für mich (und vermutlich die meisten) dürfte das begleitende photo sein. wie präsentiert sich jemand visuell? analog zu all den statistischen informationen zeigen die profilbilder meistens alles: gesicht, körper, eindeutige situationen als direkte angebote, normalerweise in einer art von dokumentarischem stil, der wiederum suggeriert, dass dies ist was man bekommt, dass dies die realität ist. doch wie ist es möglich durch visuelle repräsentation seiner selbst sich interessant zu präsentieren und gleichzeitig darauf hinzuweisen dass da noch mehr ist? wie zeigt man, dass man nicht alles zeigt? die serie FINGERLICKIN’ GOOD versucht genau dies: persönlicher, auf mich rückführbarer ausdruck zu sein und gleichzeitig darauf hinzuweisen, dass hier ein imaginärer raum entsteht, eine distanz von meiner repräsentation zu schaffen, die darauf hinweist, dass da noch mehr ist als die informationen die aus einem profil herausgelesen werden können. formal geschieht dies durch eine annäherung, durch die wahl close-ups zu machen und ausschnitte zu wählen, welche nur einen teil meiner selbst zeigen und durch eine distanzierung in der entscheidung, diese photos in schwarz weiss zu halten. inhaltlich versucht die serie dieser bilder sexuell zu sein – jedoch nicht in der form von xxx-pics, welche der normale weg sind, um sein profil interessant zu machen, sondern mit andeutungen zu arbeiten. dass dies funktioniert hat wurde mir bereits beim ersten hochladen in mein profil bestätigt: ein teil der photos wurde als sexuell explizit eingestuft. zusammengefasst ist FINGERLICKIN’ GOOD ein versuch, eine leicht andere repräsentation seiner selbst in einem homogenen umfeld zu finden: eine repräsentation, die ihre funktion des sich interessant machens erfüllt und gleichzeitig darauf hinweist, dass sie repräsentation ist und nicht behauptet, alles zu zeigen.

many gays (have to) deal with selfrepresentation in the www already since quite a while. already before the hype around different big platforms for social networking (which are compared to the gay ones amazingly poorly programmed) one could observe an integration of social platforms into the daily life of many gays. additionally, these platforms do have a different importance for gays: on the one hand it is, depending on age and where one lives one of the few possibilities to have an exchange with other gays, on the other hand these platforms became the main tool for the meeting of other men, for finding new friendships. although there are many different sites catering for gays, the profiles usually contain basically the same three parts: statistical information (size, age, place, etc.), a free text module (including the important headline) and one or more pictures. contentwise one is relatively free in what and how he presents it, one would therefore expect a scintillating wealth of difference. but the opposite is true: there is rather a homogenisation of respresantation then an explosion of creativity. one reason is certainly the possibility of a face to face meetin (actually one of the goals of having a profile in the first place). this limits the selfrepresantion in the sense that one can not deviate too much from his analogue self. another reason is the technology: the possibility to collect the most detailed statistical data enables in turn a very narrow filtering of potential friends. to reach the biggest audience possible (i.e. not being filtered out) many men orient themselves, respectively their profiles on imaginary ideals. for the statistic part of the profile this means that one feels nearly forced to do some cosmetic changes (age is one of these criterias that do not say much but are of high importance – as is cocksize, body-mass-index, length of hair and so on). this huge amount of statistical information is problematic because “soft” information, equally important factors in constituting a person (in making a man attractive) like his voice, intonation, movements, smell, posture, humour, disappears. through this huge amount of statistical information it is actually suggested that this is an image of the real person, any other information is not relevant (if as a consequence these other factors of measuring attractiveness loose their importance also in real life would be another question to ask). this disappearance of that of information can be partly compensated in a free text module. but the main focus of a profile is for me (and i gues i am not alone here) the picture. how does he present himself visually? analogue to the statistical part of a profile, the pictures usually have a kind of documentary style, pretending to show it all (also by literally showing all). but how is it possible to show oneself and at the same time to make clear that it does not show everything, that there is more? how can i show that i do not show all? the series FINGERLICKIN’ GOOD tries exactly to do that: to be a personal expression of myself and at the same time to point out that this is an imaginary space, trying to create a distance to the represantation of myself, to make visible that there is more then what can be shown in a profile. on one level this happens by making close-ups, by fragmenting myself, and through the use of black and white. on another level these pictures want to be sexual – not in the usual way of pretending to show it all by showing the most intimate details and poses in a harsh light, but by insinuation. that it worked has been proven through uploading these picture into my profile: some of them have been judged as explicit.
FINGERLICKIN’ GOOD is the attempt to find ways of visual representation that still work in this specific context to be interesting and to show myself, while at the same time making clear that is only that: a representation, not able to show everything.
